May 2008 - Smith Creek Wilderness Alert Mark Twain National Forest's "Southwest Project" undermines the wilderness values of the Smith Creek Proposed Wilderness by proposing logging, road construction, and other developments. May 2007 - Doe Run Land Exchange Next To Bell Mountain Wilderness This project is a proposal to exchange 2 parcels of MTNF land for lands owned by The Doe Run Company. A part of the Doe Run land has highway frontage adjacent to Bell Mountain Wilderness. April 2007 - A Call For Protection of Missouri Wilderness Jim Scheff of the Missouri Forest Alliance has produced a statement incorporating an agreement that was reached at a statewide Wilderness meeting in April of 2007. July 2006 - MTNF Prescribed Burn In Lower Rock Creek This project involves prescribed burning in 3,660 acres within the Lower Rock Creek Sensitive Area. Read MWC's comment letter. July 2006 - Lower Rock Creek Removed From MTNF Tornado Salvage Project The harvest of 177 acres of tornado-damaged trees within the Lower Rock Creek Sensitive Area was removed from this project. December 2006 - Forest Service Incursions Into Missouri Roadless Areas Missouri Forest Alliance sent out an alert about incursions into the Smith Creek and Lower Rock Creek Wilderness Study Areas. March 2006 - MWC Signs Roadless Areas Letter In March a group of conservation organizations sent a letter to National Forest Service chief Dale Bosworth regarding Roadless Area issues. You can view the letter here. 2006 National Forest Land Sale MWC strongly opposed the 2006-announced National Forest Land Sale. Read the Forest Service's news release. 2005 Mark Twain National Forest Plan MWC and Missouri Coalition For The Environement jointly filed an appeal of the Record Of Decision for the 2005 Plan. The appeal deals specifically with weakened protections of all 7 of the Forest's "Sensitive Areas". View the PowerPoint presentation that was used at a meeting with the Regional office. |
